I don't give a rat's ass about how the guy who shot up the Navy Yard this week got past their security. I don't care if he, or the guy in Aurora, or the fucking sonovabitch who killed all those kids in Connecticut was mentally ill.
All I care about is the fact that someone had access to a gun and used it to kill a whole lot of people doing everyday things. Going to work. Going to school. Going to the movies.
Are we all going to wear bulletproof armor 24/7?
Because the only way to stop these sick human beings from killing others isn't better mental health care (though we need it desperately), better security at every building on Earth or better background checks for gun buyers.
What we need is to make sure those guns don't get bought in the first place. For as long as they are available, innocents will get killed, be it in home accidents (lots of those), road rage or mass murders.
None of these guys could have committed these obscene massacres with a bow and arrow, or a knife, or a staple gun.
Guns killed. Guns will keep killing as long as they are out there for people's use.
